Artist Statement
Blending craftsmanship and other artistic influences, I use traditional and non traditional techniques, and blending of materials and styles to draw the viewer into my world. I like to mix metals and glass to form one-of-a-kind sculptures and environments that draw people in to inhabit an alternate space or time that is intriguing and comfortable. I use naturally rusting metals, found objects, glass and light to create an aesthetic that is both old and new. Using sculpture as the medium and mixed media as the vehicle I invite the viewer on a journey to the unexpected. Recently incorporating painting into my practice, I hope to share the passion of these broader explorations with my audience.
Artist Bio
Born and raised around a sheet metal shop, Dave King honed his skills of craft and assemblage working in, and later running, his family’s HVAC business. Having always seen metal as a rigid material with specific purposes, in 2004, Dave became fascinated with the malleable and aesthetic potentials of metals when he studied chasing and repousse with Bulgarian metalsmith Valentin Yatkov. More recently mixing in welding, and hot and cold working of glass, in the Fall of 2021, Dave began the pursuit of a Bachelor of Arts degree at the Art Institute of Chicago. There he continues his inquiries through myriad metal and glass explorations, along with foam and concrete in sculpture. Also interested in painting and lighting processes, his future is colorful and bright.
